When you know you’re ready to update a space in your home, the next step is figuring out how to make it work best for you and your family. On this project, our Designer Melanie was asked to update the design and improve the function of the space. These clients had several pain points with their master bathroom that they were ready to address. When it came time to start on this project, they knew they would be reaching out to Melanie at Dalton Carpet One.
The homeowners’ master bath was original to the house, which was built in 1987. There were several reasons our clients were ready to update their bathroom, from the design aesthetic to the function of the space. The original floor plan had a small shower and a very large, cultured marble jetted tub. The oversized tub was seen as wasted space in the en suite because of its size. The toilet sat in the corner of the bathroom completely exposed; the client wanted it to be hidden. They already had a double vanity, but it was a standard-height cabinet, which was cumbersome, and the homeowners needed more storage space.
When the customers were ready to begin their project, they set up a design appointment with Melanie. These clients had worked with Melanie on several projects in their home over the last fifteen years and were ready to tackle this space next. Their home has more of a traditional appearance and that was the homeowners’ design preference. When designing this bathroom, Melanie and the customers wanted the aesthetic to be classic, not trendy.
To remove the pain points of the master bathroom, Melanie worked with the clients to reconfigure the bathroom footprint. First, they removed the tub, which made space for a large, walk-in shower. The homeowners’ design preference included a shower bench and decorative recesses set into the shower wall—niches. Melanie suggested placing the niches below the tile chair rail so that shampoo bottles and other toiletries were hidden from view outside the shower.
Another big change to the master bath’s footprint was using the original shower to create a water closet for the toilet, keeping it tucked away and unseen. They decided to use the original toilet area to create a sit-down makeupvanity for the lady of the house, which was much more appealing to see when you walked in the bathroom. Lastly, the vanity was updated to a comfortable height with an added center storage tower, which included hidden electrical outlets. To add to the aesthetic, they raised the mirrors to the ceiling and added new lighting fixtures throughout.
For the final touches of the design, Melanie worked with the clients to choose a wallpaper that was an extension of the colors and patterns in the master bedroom. This allowed the two spaces to seamlessly connect. Melanie also suggested adding the chevron pattern above the chair rail in the shower for added interest to this classic design. The same chevron tile was used in the rest of the shower and on the dry floor tile.
